“A lot of the people that are in this room are going to be going to the retail stores,” said Susan Wood, president of the American Heart Association, which has helped to push Nexium’s price-gouging effort through the cost-cutting process.
But many of the cost-cutting measures have been against home use and come with costs and risks, experts said.
One cost-cutting measure is Nexium, which has been on the market for more than a decade. AstraZeneca, the drug’s maker, is looking at switching its price of the drug to lower its retail price, the biggest challenge that Nexium faces.
“We are trying to find a way to keep the price of this drug at the level that it is,” said David Phillips, chief executive of the American Society for the Study of Heart and Lung Disease.

AstraZeneca is hoping to keep the price of Prilosec below the inflation rate by cutting the price of Nexium from just under $2.14 a day in 2017 to just under $2.14 a day in 2023, Wood said.
“Prilosec is a very important drug, and I think it is,” Wood said.
The price cut for Prilosec on the global market is based on a model set by drugmakers such as AstraZeneca. But the cost of the drug has been removed in Europe, where it is widely available, Wood said.
AstraZeneca said it is planning to file a Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to establish an overall price strategy.
“We are in discussions with EMA and they have the information we need,” Wood said.
But the drugmaker is not ready to accept that information, and it is hoping to have it approved by the end of 2023.
The plan to cut the price of Prilosec by two-and-a-half times a year is expected to be filed in 2023, Wood said, but it may take several months for the company to get final approval from the EMA and regulatory agencies.
